Rhizodus hibberti was named by Agassiz (1843). It is not extant. It is the type species of Rhizodus.

Rhizodus gracilis was named by M'Coy (1848). It is not extant.

It was synonymized subjectively with Rhizodus hibberti by Jeffery (2012).
Rhizodus anceps was named by Newberry (1888).

It was recombined as Megalichthys anceps by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Rhizodus hibberti by Jeffery (2012); it was considered a nomen oblitum by Borgen and Nakrem (2016).
Rhizodus angustus was named by Newberry (1856).

It was recombined as Megalichthys angustus by Hay (1902); it was synonymized subjectively with Rhizodus hibberti by Jeffery (2012); it was considered a nomen oblitum by Borgen and Nakrem (2016).
