Hornera was named by Lamouroux (1821) [Sepkoski's age data: K Sant-l R Sepkoski's reference number: 589]. It is extant.

It was assigned to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Horneridae by Stach (1936), Bassler (1953), Lee et al. (1997), Bock (2000), Schmidt (2003), Di Martino and Taylor (2014) and Gordon and Taylor (2015).
