Mitoclema was named by Ulrich (1882). Its type is Mitoclema cinctosum.

It was assigned to Entalophoridae by Bassler (1911); to Diastoporidae by Bassler (1953); to Cyclostomata by Sepkoski (2002); and to Crownoporidae by Jiménez-Sánchez (2009).
