Homotrypella was named by Ulrich (1886). Its type is Homotrypella instabilis.

It was assigned to Trepostomida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Monticuliporidae by Bassler (1911), Bassler (1953), Adamcyzk and Pachut (2013).
