Stereognathus was named by Charlesworth (1854). Its type is Stereognathus ooliticus. It was considered monophyletic by Waldman and Savage (1972).
It was assigned to Mammalia by Owen (1859); to Marsupialia by Owen (1871); to Allotheria by Marsh (1889); and to Tritylodontidae by Simpson (1928), Simpson (1929), Waldman and Savage (1972), Carroll (1988), Maisch et al. (2004), Panciroli et al. (2017).
