Vipera was named by Laurenti (1768). It is extant. Its type is Coluber aspis.
It was assigned to Viperinae by Rage (1984), Szyndlar (1987) and Uetz (2005); and to Viperidae by Bachmayer and Szyndlar (1985), Bachmayer and Szyndlar (1987), Carroll (1988), Szyndlar and Zerova (1992), Zerova (1992) and Cernansky et al. (2015).
