Maconiceras was named by Buckman (1926).

It was reranked as Harpoceras (Maconiceras) by Bécaud (2006); it was synonymized subjectively with Harpoceras by Howarth (2013).

It was assigned to Harpoceras by Bécaud (2006); and to Harpoceratinae by Benzaggagh et al. (2022).
