Taxonomy
Pterichthys macrocephala was named by Egerton (1862). Its type specimen is BMNH P.606, a partial skeleton, and it is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Bothriolepis macrocephala by Woodward (1891), Denison (1978).
