Dysaster loryi was named by Gras (1852). It is the type species of Smithiaster.

It was recombined as Smithiaster loryi by Barras (2007).

C. G. Barras 2007Crown group Atelostomata with a disjunct ap- ical disc. The two portions of the apical disc are linked by a single, large complemental plate (Fig. 5A). The ambulacra are petaliferous with slightly elongate, circumflexed pore pairs aborally. Ambulacrum in is flush with the test surface along its entire length.
