Tomognathus was named by Agassiz (1850) [Named ascribed to Agassiz in Dixon 1850.]. Its type is Tomognathus mordax.

It was assigned to Halecoidei by Dixon (1850); to Chirocentridae by Woodward (1901); and to Amioidea by Forey and Patterson (2006).
