Guanlingsaurus was named by Yin et al. (2000).
It was assigned to Ichthyosauria by Wang et al. (2008); to Guanlingsauridae by McGowan and Motani (2003) and Maisch (2010); to Shastasauridae by Ji et al. (2013) and Druckenmiller et al. (2014); and to Shastasaurinae by Ji et al. (2016).
