Taxonomy
Ophthalmosaurus monocharactus was named by Appleby (1956). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Weymouth Oxford Clay Formation (non-specific locality data), which is in a Callovian/Oxfordian marine claystone in the Oxford Clay Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was synonymized subjectively with Ophthalmosaurus icenicus by Kirton (1983).
