Taxonomy
Thryptodus was named by Loomis (1900). It is the type genus of Plethodidae.

It was synonymized subjectively with Anogmius by Hay (1902).

It was assigned to Actinopterygii by Woodward (1901); to Thryptodontidae by Jordan (1905); and to Plethodidae by van der Laan (2019).
