Heliomedusa was named by Sun and Hou (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: Cm Atda-u Sepkoski's reference number: 779].

It was assigned to Craniopsidae by Williams et al. (2000); to Craniopsida by Sepkoski (2002); to Disciniidae by Chen et al. (2007); to Brachiopoda by Bengtson (1992), Williams et al. (2007); and to Mickwitziidae by Liang et al. (2020).
