Aulorhynchidae was named by Gill (1861). It is extant. Its type is Aulorhynchus.

It was assigned to Hemibranchii by Jordan (1963); to Aulorhynchoidea by Pietsch (1978); to Scorpaeniformes by Nelson et al. (2016); to Gasterosteoidei by Nazarkin (2019); and to Gasterosteales by Betancur et al. (2013), van der Laan (2019).
