Gavialosuchus eggenburgensis was named by Toula and Kail (1885). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Eggenburg, which is in a Burdigalian marine horizon in the Burgeschleinitz Formation of Austria.
It was corrected as Gavialosuchus eggenburgense by Hay (1930); it was misspelled as Gavialosuchus eggenbergensis by Brochu (2020) and Rio and Mannion (2021).
