Taxonomy
Cryptaulax variformatum was named by Bandel (1994). Its type specimen is UMIP 22392 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Manzanares section Man-3, which is in a Sinemurian reef, buildup or bioherm wackestone in the Condorsinga Formation of Peru.
