Taxonomy
Jacaretinga praecursor was named by Rusconi (1933). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Barrancas del Rio Parana, which is in a Tortonian marginal marine siltstone/sandstone in the Entre Rios Formation of Argentina.
It was recombined as Caiman praecursor by Patterson (1936).
