Scaphorthis was named by Cooper (1956) [\]. Its type is Scaphorthis virginiensis.

It was assigned to Plectorthinae by Wright (1964), Mitchell (1977), Potter (1990); to Giraldiellidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Orthida by Sepkoski (2002).
