Acanthatia was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: D Fame-m Sepkoski's reference number: 25,708].

It was assigned to Chonopectinae by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) and Campbell and Engel (1963); to Araksalosiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
