Ammonites engelhardti was named by d'Orbigny (1844). Its type specimen is MNHN.F.R01631 and is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Amaltheus (Pseudoamaltheus) engelhardti by Howarth (1955), Howarth (1956), Meister (1986), Enay et al. (1994).
