Chonetinetes was named by Cooper and Grant (1969) [Sepkoski's age data: P Leon-u P Djhu Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Chonetinetes reversus.

It was assigned to Svalbardiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
