Glyptambonites was named by Cooper (1956). Its type is Glyptambonites musculosus.

It was assigned to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Palaeostrophomeninae by Williams et al. (2000), Cocks (2010) and Liljeroth et al. (2017).
