Nothopindax was named by Cooper and Grant (1974) [Sepkoski's age data: P Asse Sepkoski's reference number: 7]. Its type is Nothopindax egregius.

It was assigned to Derbyiidae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
