Rotfanella weissi was named by Grundel (1999). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Kremmeldorf near Bamberg, Bavaria, which is in a Toarcian marine horizon in Germany.
It was recombined as Graphis weissi by Gründel and Nützel (2013) and Schulbert and Nützel (2013).
