Ammonites sphaericus was named by Sowerby (1814). Its type specimen is BMNH 43871, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was considered a nomen nudum by Martin (1809); it was recombined as Goniatites sphaericus by Smith (1903), Muir-Wood and Stubblefield (1951), Ruzhentsev and Bogoslovskaya (1971), Korn and Ebbighausen (2025).
