Rugatia was named by Muir-Wood and Cooper (1960) [Sepkoski's age data: C Step-l P Leon-u Sepkoski's reference number: 7,963].

It was assigned to Dictyoclostinae by Williams et al. (2000); to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002); to Dictyoclostini by Williams et al. (2007); and to Rugatiini by Lazarev (2011).
