Shlyginia was named by Nikitin and Popov (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: O m Sepkoski's reference number: 881].

It was assigned to Leptellinidae by Popov et al. (2000); to Leptellininae by Williams et al. (2000) and Percival et al. (2001); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
