Taffia was named by Butts (1926) [Sepkoski's age data: O Aren-l O Llvi Sepkoski's reference number: 878]. Its type is Taffia planoconvexa. It is the type genus of Taffiinae, Taffiidae.
It was assigned to Taffiinae by Williams et al. (2000); and to Strophomenida by Sepkoski (2002).
