Aulites was named by Richardson (1987) [Sepkoski's age data: T R Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. It is extant. Its type is Atretia brazieri.

It was assigned to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Cryptoporidae by Williams et al. (2002).
