Burrirhynchia was named by Owen (1962) [Sepkoski's age data: K Barr K Ceno Sepkoski's reference number: 1,1091].

It was assigned to Cretirhynchiinae by Williams et al. (2002); and to Rhynchonellida by Sepkoski (2002).
