Cymbospondylus natans was named by Merriam (1908). Its type specimen is UCMP 9873, a limb element (humerus), and it is a 3D body fossil.
It was synonymized subjectively with Phalarodon nordenskioeldii by Nicholls et al. (1999); it was considered a nomen dubium by McGowan and Motani (2003).
