Rotfanella herrigi was named by Grundel (1999). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Bore Rogätz 11/63, depth 457,6-466,3 m, Saxony-Anhalt, which is in a Bathonian offshore siliciclastic in Germany.
It was recombined as Graphis herrigi by Gründel and Nützel (2013).
