Claudeonychia babini

Taxonomy
Claudeonychia babini was named by Pojeta (1997). Its type specimen is USNM 46672, a shell (internal mold of whole shell), and it is a mold. Its type locality is Mount Auburn, Cincinnati, which is in a Maysvillian carbonate limestone in the Grant Lake Formation of Ohio. It is the type species of Claudeonychia.

J., Jr. Pojeta 1997Claudeonychia having about 30 costae and with posterodorsal alation projecting as far as, or beyond, the posteroventral part of the shell.

Shell rectangular, possessing about 30 costae; angle gamma 75-80°; umbones rounded, not keeled, projecting only slightly above the dorsal margin; size large for genus; length equal to or greater than the so-called greatest dimension; greatest convexity of a single valve about 9 mm; byssal gape elongate and narrow, located just below beaks; byssal sinus shallow; ligamental space narrow. Posterior shell margin sshaped, posterodorsal alation projecting about as far as, or beyond, the posteroventral shell margin. Adductor, anterior byssal retractor, and posterior byssal-pedal retractor muscle scars known. Ligamental insertions and dentition unknown.
