Taxonomy
Byssoarca mississippiensis was named by Conrad (1848) [DISTRIBUTION: Early Oligocene; Gulf Coastal Plain.]. Its type specimen is ANSP 30648, a shell, and it is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Vicksburg, which is in a Rupelian marine marl in the Byram Marl Formation of Mississippi.

It was recombined as Navicula mississippiensis by Conrad (1854); it was recombined as Cucullaearca mississippiensis by Conrad (1865); it was recombined as Arca (Byssoarca) mississippiensis by Meyer (1885); it was recombined as Barbatia (Cucullaearca) mississippiensis by Jung (1965); it was recombined as Barbatia mississippiensis by Cooke (1921) and Dockery (1982).
