Geodia was named by Lamarck (1815) [Sepkoski's age data: K Camp-l R]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Geodiinae, Geodiidae.

It was assigned to Geodiidae by Rigby and Smith (1992); to Astrophorida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Geodiinae by Finks et al. (2004).
