Yalongia was named by Xu and Liu (1983) [Sepkoski's age data: Tr m Sepkoski's reference number: 881]. Its type is Yalongia angulocostata. It is the type genus of Yalongiinae.
It was assigned to Spiriferida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Yalongiinae by Williams et al. (2006).
