Cromatrypa was named by Havlíček (1987). Its type is Cromatrypa orbis.

It was assigned to Septatrypinae by Musteikis and Modzalevskaya (2002); to Atrypida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Lissatrypidae by Williams et al. (2002).
