Acanthoceras amudariense was named by Arkhanguelsky (1916).

It was synonymized subjectively with Watinoceras (Watinoceras) coloradoense by Cooper (1978); it was recombined as Watinoceras amudariense by Reyment (1955), Zaborski (1987).
