Ptilorhynchia (Proteorhynchia) imlayi was named by Sandy (1990). Its type specimen is USNM 446363 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Sierra de Parras, La Pena Formation, Coahuila, which is in an Aptian marine limestone in the La Péna Formation of Mexico.
