Hammatoceras amplectens was named by Buckman (1889).

It was recombined as Eudmetoceras (Euaptetoceras) amplectens by Westermann (1969), Westermann and Riccardi (1982); it was recombined as Euaptetoceras amplectens by Sadki (1994).
