Scopelus benoisti was named by Cocco (1838). It is extant.

It was corrected as Scopelus benoiti by Bonaparte (1840); it was recombined as Hygophum benoiti by Fraser-Brunner (1949), Steurbaut (1979), Stringer (1998), Girone et al. (2006).
