Bidenichthys was named by Barnard (1934).

It was assigned to Bythitidae by Schwarzhans (2003), Schwarzhans (2004), Schwarzhans (2007); to Brosmophycinae by Schwarzhans and Bratischko (2011); and to Bythitinae by Schwarzhans (2019).
