Apogonidarum eocenicus was named by Shepherd (1916). It is a 3D body fossil.

It was recombined as Gnathophis eocenicus by Schwarzhans (1980); it was recombined as Rhynchoconger eocenicus by Nolf and Dockery (1993), Schwarzhans (2007), Schwarzhans (2019).
