Azorica was named by Carter (1873) [Sepkoski's age data: J Call R Sepkoski's reference number: 1066]. It is extant. It is the type genus of Azoricidae, Azoricoidea, Azoricinae.

It was assigned to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Azoricinae by Finks et al. (2004).
