Bolospongia was named by Hinde (1883) [Sepkoski's age data: J Oxfo-m K Sn Sepkoski's reference number: 868]. It is not extant. Its type is Bolospongia globata.
It was assigned to Tetracladina by Hinde (1883); to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Phymatellinae by Finks et al. (2004).
