Calycocoelia was named by Bassler (1927) [Sepkoski's age data: O Llvi-l S Ludl-l Sepkoski's reference number: 210,880]. Its type is Calycocoelia typicalis.

It was assigned to Archaeoscyphidae by Bassler (1927); to Lithistida by Sepkoski (2002); and to Anthaspidellidae by Johns (1994), Liu et al. (2003).
