Trigonodus abdominalis was named by Jelen (1989). Its type specimen is Univerze Edvarda Kardelja 3756 and is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is PV6, Poskusni Vsek, Lesno Brdo, which is in a Julian lagoonal/restricted shallow subtidal wackestone in Slovenia.
