Chonetes woolacotti was named by Trechmann (1945). It is a 3D body fossil. Its type locality is Ford Lime Quarry, 2 feet above base, which is in a Wuchiapingian carbonate dolomite in the Ford Formation of the United Kingdom.
It was recombined as Neochonetes (Zechiella) woolacotti by Archbold (1999).
