Glyptosphaeritidae was named by Bernard (1895). Its type is Glyptosphaerites. It is the type family of Glyptosphaeritida, Glyptocystitidacea.
It was assigned to Seriolata by Regnéll (1945); to Glyptosphaeritida by Beaver et al. (1967); to Glyptosphaeritidacea by Mergl and Prokop (2006); and to Glyptosphaeritida by Sheffield and Sumrall (2019).
